There are 2 ways to use these emoticons.
1.) Click on the image you want to use - this usually only works on desktops and laptops.
Or
2.) Hightlight the text above the image you want to use and copy it (CTRL + C).
Then
Put your cursor back into the chat input field, paste it to chat input field (CTRL + V).
