Do all you Trumpies like to be punished? Do you want our country to be just like Donald's mentor Putin's country? And how did that big stock recovery turn out for you?

this is so true we must defend ALL migrants each and every one NO deportations!
"We must defend the rights of people who do have criminal records. No one deserves to be whisked away to a brutal prison that deprives them of basic human rights – no matter if it’s in El Salvador, Louisiana, California, Pennsylvania or New York. Criminal records and bona fide gang membership don’t turn human beings into monsters. If Trump goes through with his plan of sending citizens to El Salvador, he could initially target people convicted of heinous crimes. This would allow federal officials to ask: “Why do liberals care about pedophiles and murderers?”
We should be prepared to defend the basic rights of all of Trump’s targets with our full strength. If a single person becomes disposable, anyone could become the next target. Last week, Trump said he “loved” the idea of sending American “criminals” to El Salvador, and law professors are sounding the alarm about citizen student activists being subjected to terrorism prosecutions. First it will be the “migrant gang member” or “terrorist on a student visa” sent to Cecot. Next it will be the domestic gang member and the terrorist-supporting citizen. Eventually, perhaps any political opponent could be construed as a criminal-terrorist."

"the leaders of high-tech in the United States and many of the largest donors to Mr trump's
campaign are also major shareholders in a halfozen companies that are doing mining in Greenland it turns out and that Greenland may be the locust for lots of the electricity
generating that the high tech industry needs to operate the AI and all the rest in other busy one of the reasons is Greenland is thought to possess likely quantities of the rare
earths among other things which those mining companies are busily searching for using the money that Mr trump's donors gave them i mean this stinks to high hell that's what it does anyone who knows about classic governmental grift should be have their antenna vibrating
about all of this but mostly these are excuses the issue with China is not about rare earths or even export import the imports from China let's remember half of them come from subsidiaries of American corporations who went there precisely because it was more profitable to produce in China and ship it back here than it was to produce it here in the
first place mr trump yells at the Chinese but the Chinese didn't make the key decision the Chinese didn't decide for those companies to move those companies led by good old Americans made that decision and they made it for the good old capitalist reason to maximize their
profits that's the reality and the reason they're not coming back to the United States is the same as the reason why they left and tells you more about Mr trump's lousy planning the wages here are too high they're not coming here it's not competitive everywhere else in the world or almost everywhere the wages are lower and that's where they're going and when
you add that the market is growing faster outside the United States than inside well then you have the one two punch of all capitalism entrepreneurs go where the wages are low and the market is growing the United States is not that place and tariffs aren't going to make it"

Trump's trade war against China is escalating, but so far it seems to have only facilitated a growing political and economic isolation of the United States. A Torture Among Tortures
Even in ancient societies not known for their delicacy about violence, solitary confinement stood out as a horror. In our own time we are far less clear-eyed about its violent nature.
In particular, I am struck by one remarkable fact: that these condemnations come from societies and historical moments that were not, generally speaking, known for their delicacy about violence. These were times of public executions (often of a most grisly kind), torture, slavery, and wars of imperial conquest. These, too, were not unquestioned, but the point is that—even in ages accustomed to the gore of the gladiatorial games or death by drawing and quartering—solitary confinement stood out as a horror.
Our own time is certainly not without its violence, but we are far less clear-eyed, it would seem, about the violence of solitary confinement. In short, the United States has some work to do if we wish to be as civilized as the Middle Ages.
Technically speaking, for the ancient Romans solitary confinement was not torture—it was something worse. According to their foremost legal scholar, Ulpian, torture meant “the torment and suffering of the body in order to elicit the truth.” In this sense, torture was a quite ordinary thing: not only was it perfectly legal, but it was an accepted part of the process of judicial fact-finding. It was governed by laws and safeguards, precisely because the Romans knew that it was res fragilis et periculosa, “a delicate and dangerous affair.”

Donors open their wallets to progressives challenging Trump while Musk backs Trump allies
Donors filled the coffers of Democrats who have emerged as prominent critics of President Donald Trump in the first months of his second term – signaling an early surge of enthusiasm among progressive contributors, new campaign reports filed Tuesday show.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the country’s best-known progressives, raised $9.6 million during the first quarter of the year, a record-breaking haul for the New York Democrat and one of the strongest quarterly fundraising hauls ever for a House member.
Sanders, a Vermont independent, raised $11.5 million in the first quarter of the year. Sanders, who just began his fourth Senate term, entered April with more than $19 million remaining in his campaign account.
“The people are sending Democrats a message about the direction they would like to see,” a top Sanders adviser, Faiz Shakir, wrote on X in response to a post about AOC’s fundraising total.
Other Trump critics also posted eye-popping sums. Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, who, like Sanders, doesn’t face reelection until 2030, raised a whopping $8 million during the first quarter – the biggest haul of his Senate career. He’s become a leading Trump critic on social media.
And Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett raised more than $1.6 million during the first three months of the year – the first seven-figure fundraising quarter for the Democratic firebrand and nearly double her previous quarterly record.

"we’ve got a $36 trillion debt—100% of which you can attribute to three presidents: Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump. Reagan’s tax cuts, cumulatively, add up to about $20 trillion. Bush’s tax cuts are $6 trillion. The two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that Bush lied us into so he could win the 2004 election—that’s another $6 trillion. And Trump’s last tax cut cost us an estimated $5 trillion. That’s $37 trillion. Our national debt is $36.2 trillion. They did all this because of Jude Wanniski’s "Two Santa Claus" theory:

Another change made in the Maryland bill before it was passed was to limit a second look to individuals who were under the age of 25 when they committed their crime. I understand the reason why this limit was included, because the evidence is so strong that the brains of people younger than that age are not yet emotionally mature, thus, they struggle to control their impulses. But the evidence also shows that most periods of criminal behavior don’t last more than 10 years. No matter what age people were when they committed their crime, 20 years later, their proclivity to continue has faded away.
The Washington, D.C., council recognized that fact and included a “universal second look” provision in the revised criminal code it passed last year. Unfortunately, the U.S. Congress (which has a say due to our lack of statehood) stepped in and killed the entire bill. Maryland had a chance to correct that wrong for its own residents and failed.
I agree that some degree of second look is better than none. But I hope the Maryland General Assembly will track the outcomes of the early releases that will follow this bill, and will use the low recidivism (which we have seen in D.C.) to revisit its exclusions and offer the hope of a second look to more people.

Maryland’s ‘second look’ bill carveouts went too far
What sours the achievement of Maryland’s action, however, are its carveouts and instructions to judges. Many individuals from D.C. who are now free and contributing to the broader DMV community would not be under the Maryland law.
For example, among the factors that judges are instructed to consider in the Maryland law is the nature of the person’s crime. Yet that flies in the face of the basis for the bill — the substantial evidence documenting that the brains of young people are immature and thus unable to control their impulses. The nature of a crime is also a factor that cannot be changed, no matter how much a person develops and evolves over time. If that is considered when determining whether a person deserves a second chance, freedom may be forever out of reach — no matter how exemplary he or she has become.
A second flaw of the bill is the blanket exemption of individuals with life-without-parole sentences, who are in prison because they killed a police officer or other first responder, or who committed sex-related offenses. Among the people I met during my incarceration is a man saddled with two of those labels. At the age of 24, he shot and killed a police officer. If you delve into the details of his case, you’ll learn that he didn’t set out that day to kill an officer and that there were many mitigating details that were not considered at trial. But even more importantly, it is over 30 years later, and my friend has matured and otherwise changed in so many ways. In fact, if you ask most people who know him, they’d cite him as one of the most influential mentors they had inside — encouraging them to put in the self-work needed to be worthy of release. Think of the good he could do with troubled youth if he were given a second look!

Legal expert details 'nightmare' that lies ahead if Trump uses 'military against Americans'
"The president alone gets to decide what constitutes an 'insurrection,' 'rebellion,' or 'domestic violence,'" Sarat warns. "And once troops are deployed, it will not be easy to get them off the streets in any place that the president thinks is threatened by 'radical-left lunatics.' That's why April 20 will be so consequential. If Americans take to the streets to protest the president's invocation of the Insurrection Act, the president might use those protests as an excuse to extend the deployment of troops."
Sarat continues, "The prospect of using the military against Americans is a nightmare and would mark a further descent into authoritarianism…. As we contemplate what might happen on April 20, Americans who object to the invocation of the Insurrection Act will be in something of a bind. If they take to the streets to protest, that may give the administration a pretext to expand its use further."

Musk and Trump Are Increasingly Unpopular, New Polling Finds
President Donald Trump and "First Buddy" Elon Musk have made quite an impression on the American public as they continue to take a wrecking ball to Washington - and it's not the good kind.
New polling from the University of Massachusetts Amherst reveals that after almost three months in office, a majority of respondents disapprove of Trump's actions in office. Just 27 percent said they "Strongly Approve" of his job performance, with another 17 percent indicating they "Somewhat Approve" of him so far in his second term, for total favorables of 44 percent. By comparison, 44 percent "Strongly Disapprove," and 7 percent "Somewhat Disapprove," for an unfavorability rate of 51 percent.
Trump is also underwater on every issue apart from immigration. At least 40 percent of respondents said he has handled jobs, foreign affairs, civil rights, inflation, and trade "Not Well At All," with the president receiving especially poor marks on the latter two economic fronts: a combined 62 percent unfavorable on inflation and 58 percent on trade, presumably as the cost of household necessities hasn't budged, while Trump's messy tariffs plans have roiled international markets and investment portfolios.

Poll: 3 in 4 New Yorkers want a rent freeze
Capping the rents on rent-stabilized apartments has support across the political spectrum.
Of the 854 likely New York City voters surveyed, 78% said they supported a rent freeze – a term essentially meaning landlords would be barred from increasing rents for rent-stabilized apartments over a set period of time. While support was most highly concentrated among Democrats at 83%, 63% of Republicans also expressed they were in favor of the idea. Other findings of the poll recently released by Data for Progress have centered on similar quality-of-life issues like support for free buses and the biggest cost-related issues driving New Yorkers from the city. (At 54%, the cost of housing was the most common reason people said they considered leaving the city.)

Harvard University on Monday rejected the Trump administration's escalating demands that the Ivy League school make drastic policy changes or face the loss of billions in federal funding.
The administration has pressured many universities to end diversity efforts, cooperate with immigration authorities and suppress pro-Palestinian activism on campus, which it characterizes as fighting antisemitism. At Harvard, the government is seeking changes to governance, hiring, student admissions and more, as well as demanding investigations into academic programs and individual professors for discrimination against Jewish and Israeli students.
Lawyers representing Harvard wrote to top officials Monday saying the university had already made many changes in the past year aimed at improving student safety, rejecting government encroachment into its on-campus governance.
"The university will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional
rights. Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government. Accordingly, Harvard will not accept the government’s terms," reads the letter, in part.
"Harvard remains open to dialogue about what the university has done, and is planning to do, to improve the experience of every member of its community. But Harvard is not prepared to agree to demands that go beyond the lawful authority of this or any administration."

Democratic lawmakers say they’ll travel to El Salvador to push for Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s release
"We must all stand as a united front against the kidnapping and illegal detention of Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador," progressive Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., said in a post to X, tagging Van Hollen. "Senator, I am willing to join you and help Organize other members of the House to do the same."
Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., reshared Frost's post, writing that she was "ready to join" her colleagues in traveling to El Salvador to demand Abrego Garcia's release.
The push to return Abrego Garcia to the U.S. began after Justice Department officials acknowledged that he should not have been sent to El Salvador because of a 2019 order from an immigration judge, who barred him from being sent to the country because he might be subject to persecution. In a decision last week, the Supreme Court told the administration to "facilitate" his return.

America is dangerously close to being run by a king who answers to no one | Opinion
If Trump can defy the Supreme Court, it's curtains for America
Again, you should absolutely care about the Maryland man presently enduring God knows what in a Central American prison.
And you should care equally about the other seemingly innocent immigrants getting “accidentally” rounded up and dispatched to that same prison.
But even if you don’t care about what happens to immigrants, I strongly suggest you think long and hard about what it means to have a president who gleefully ignores the courts. I want you to ponder that slippery slope and whether your idea of America involves a king who answers to nobody dispatching American citizens he happens to dislike.
Because that Oval Office meeting with El Salvador’s president showed, in no uncertain terms, that we’re perilously close to a scenario where Trump just does as he pleases. If that's what Republicans want, they should have the guts to stand up and say so, because this is what they asked for.
But for everyone else, it's time to stand up and shout “Hell no!” right freakin’ now, and not a moment later.

We’re on the verge of a universal allergy cure
The one allergy treatment to rule them all, explained.
A century ago, antihistamines were a revolution in allergy treatment. But now, we’re on the cusp of another.
Omalizumab, sold as Xolair, is an asthma medication that was approved more than 20 years ago, but it has proven successful in treating seasonal allergies in recent preliminary trials. So successful, in fact, that now some doctors in the US are prescribing it for certain patients during hay fever season. It is an injection, rather than a pill or a spray, that’s given a couple of weeks before pollen and grass levels start to rise.
One obvious benefit is you get a single shot and enjoy your spring. But even better, omalizumab can forestall allergic reactions at the source. That means an injection could stop all allergic reactions — not only seasonal allergies but food allergies (such as peanuts) and insect allergies for a prolonged period of time. This class of treatment — monoclonal antibodies, special artificial proteins that carry instructions to the body’s immune system — have the potential to be a genuine all-in-one allergy wonder drug.

@56282
The analysis comes as Republicans in the U.S. Congress and President Donald Trump work to advance another round of tax cuts that would predominantly benefit wealthy Americans and large corporations. The Trump administration is also trying to gut the Internal Revenue Service with large-scale workforce cuts, which would further hinder the agency's ability to pursue rich tax cheats.
FTF's new report notes the "enormous political influence" that the Silicon Six exert to preserve and enhance their tax benefits: The six companies spent a combined $115 million lobbying the U.S. government and the European Union last year.
To prevent corporate tax avoidance that is costing governments around the world billions of dollars in revenue that could be spent on education, healthcare, and other priorities, FTF said the U.S. should "end the FDII tax break" and back a 15% global minimum tax on multinational corporations.
In February, Trump withdrew the U.S. from a tax agreement that included a global minimum levy.
FTF also urged other governments to "give more serious consideration to the degree to which the Silicon Six's overseas revenue is subject to low levels of corporate income tax and develop more assertive responses to ensure that a fairer tax contribution is secured and so that more equitable business competition can operate within their jurisdictions."

Tax Day Report Exposes Six US Corporate Giants Responsible for Dodging $278 Billion
"Our analysis would indicate that tax avoidance continues to be hard-wired into corporate structures," said the CEO of the Fair Tax Foundation.
A report published Tuesday to coincide with the tax filing deadline in the United States found that, over the past decade, six of the country's largest tech corporations have paid nearly $278 billion less in taxes than they should have under statutory tax rates worldwide.
The analysis by the Fair Tax Foundation (FTF) estimates that the so-called "Silicon Six"—Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, Netflix, Apple, and Microsoft—paid an average corporate income tax rate of 18.8% on a combined $2.5 trillion in profits between 2015 and 2024.
That's well below the average statutory corporate tax rate during that period in the U.S. (29.7%) and globally (27%), resulting in a "tax gap" of $277.8 billion.
"Our analysis would indicate that tax avoidance continues to be hard-wired into corporate structures," said Paul Monaghan, FTF's chief executive officer. "The Silicon Six's corporate income tax contributions are, in percentage terms, way below what sectors such as banking and energy are paying in many parts of the world."
Of the six corporate behemoths examined in the report, Amazon is the worst tax offender, according to FTF—but all of the companies are guilty of what the group called "aggressive" practices to avoid taxation.
The companies have also benefited greatly from the foreign-derived intangible income tax break. FTF said that, thanks to the tax break, "much of the Silicon Six's overseas revenue is subject to 'tax haven' level rates" in the U.S.
"This is especially so at Meta (Facebook), Alphabet (Google), and Netflix, where the foreign-derived intangible income (FDII) deduction reduced their effective tax rate by a substantial five percentage points each in 2024," the new analysis found. "The FDII has been worth $30 billion to the Silicon Six over the past three years alone."

"Other common ways that billionaires build their coffers off the backs of others include
paying garbage wages and subjecting workers to abusive labor conditions. But portraying themselves as rugged individuals who overcame poverty or “did it on their own"
remains an effective propaganda tool for the ultrawealthy. One that keeps workers from rising up collectively to demand fairer wages – and one that ultimately distracts from the role that billionaires play in fostering poverty in the first place. Billionaires say their success proves they can spend money more wisely and efficiently than the government.
Government spending Yet they have no problem with government spending when it comes to receiving corporate subsidies. When arguing for even more tax breaks, they claim each “dollar the government takes from [them] is a dollar less” for their “critical” role in expanding prosperity for all Americans, through job creation and philanthropy.
Well that’s rubbish. 50 years of tax cuts for the wealthy have failed to trickle down.
As a result of Trump’s tax cuts, 2018 saw the 400 richest American families pay a lower
tax rate than the middle class. They want to have their cake – and everyone else’s cake – and eat it, too. Behind every ten-figure net worth is systemic inequality, inherited wealth, labor exploitation, tax loopholes, and government subsidies. To claim these fortunes are “self-made” is to perpetuate a myth that blames the wealth gap"

"U.S. billionaire wealth has more than DOUBLED since 2018. The tax cuts have also added $2 trillion to the national debt so far, but that hasn’t stopped Trump and the so-called
“party of fiscal responsibility” from doubling down on renewing them. If Trump renews
the expiring tax cuts for individuals that primarily benefited the rich. This would cost $4.6 trillion over the next decade, more than double the cost of the original tax cuts.
Trump has also threatened to lower the corporate tax rate even further
from 21% to 15%, which would cost another $1 trillion. It’s trickle-down economics on steroids. All of this would cause the federal deficit and debt to soar,
which Republicans will then use as an excuse to cut spending on government programs

The Dangers of Congress’s Latest Election Bill
The SAVE Act threatens to block millions of Americans from voting while also imposing significant burdens on state and local election officials.
The SAVE Act, which is currently pending in both chambers, would require American citizens to show in person a birth certificate, passport or other document proving citizenship when they register or re-register to vote. That single requirement could bar as many as 21 million American citizens who don’t have these documents readily available from voting. It would effectively eliminate online and mail registration — popular options for many Americans. It would also upend existing processes and procedures that keep our elections running — without any federal funding or guidance for the officials charged with implementing it.

this reform is alright but it includes carve outs which is not good and is only limited to 18 to 24 year olds and its after 20 years NY second look bill would include a second look for everyone after 10 years
Marlylands Second Look Act would allow inmates imprisoned for 20 years or more and who committed their crime between the ages of 18 and 24 the right to petition for a sentence reconsideration hearing before a judge. Sexual offenders and those sentenced to life without parole do not qualify.
Nearly 2,000 of Maryland’s more than 16,000 inmates could qualify for an early release hearing under the bill.

'This Executive Order is Illegal': Trump Attacks Half-Century of Environmental Protections in One Fell Swoop
"This chaotic administration is obviously desperate to smash through every environmental guardrail that protects people or preserves wildlife, but steps like this will be laughed out of court," said one advocate.
Numerous environmental protection groups were preparing to file lawsuits Friday after President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to repeal what he called "unlawful regulations" aimed at protecting the public from pollution, oil spills, and other harms—sharply curtailing the process through which rules are changed as he ordered agencies to "sunset" major regulations.
The order was issued a week-and-a-half before the deadline set by another presidential action in February, when Trump required agencies to identify "unconstitutional" and "unlawful" regulations for elimination or modification within 60 days.

US and El Salvador Guilty of 'Grave' Crimes of Enforced Disappearance, Arbitrary Detention: HRW
"The cruelty of the U.S. and Salvadoran governments has put these people outside the protection of the law and caused immense pain to their families," said one human rights
Human Rights Watch on Friday accused the governments of the United States and El Salvador of "a grave violation of international human rights law" over the deportation more than 230 Venezuelan nationals by the Trump administration to a megaprison in El Salvador last month.
The actions taken against the deportees constitute both enforced disappearances and arbitrary detention, according to a statement from the group released Friday.

Criminalization: the Core of Authoritarianism, Fascism, and Resistance
Criminalization is not only a primary tool to suppress dissent, silence opposition, and enforce policies that consolidate and enforce power - it is at the core of how Right wing, authoritarian and fascist agendas, movements, and regimes are enacted, legitimized, and entrenched.
Interrupting criminalization - a political process that extends beyond criminal laws, policing, and punishment to a collective construction of categories of "others" framed as existential threats to an imagined and actual social order to be contained, expelled, and, ultimately eradicated - must therefore be at the core of our resistance.
