all of this trouble really started in Congress. The House Committee on Education and the Workforce has a broad mandate, mostly focused on economic issues. Its official website says that it is “focused on promoting access to high-quality education for students and safe, productive workplaces for working Americans.” Yet somehow, the committee’s chair, Representative Virginia Foxx of North Carolina, a far-right Republican, aided and abetted by committee colleague Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, thought it appropriate for the body to hold a hearing on April 17 in which they both questioned the president of Columbia University, Nemat Shafik, on whether she was doing enough to suppress expressions of antisemitism and criticism of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza on the Columbia campus.
Shafik, apparently eager not to follow in the footsteps of the presidents of Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and MIT at an earlier hearing of the same committee, made a number of statements at the hearing that exacerbated tensions on the Columbia campus and helped lead to some actions that punished students at Columbia for the peaceful expression of their views on the Gaza conflict.
This, in turn, inspired students at universities across the country to demonstrate solidarity with the Columbia students by holding what started out as peaceful protests on their own campuses against Israel’s campaign in Gaza. Some of these universities followed the path of president Shafik by calling in the police and suspending the student protesters. The House committee’s hearings became the precipitating factor in creating a crisis in American higher education.

The “outside agitator” trope was much used by racists in the Jim Crow South as a way to demonize the civil rights movement. It is, as Columbia historian Mae Ngai noted, a “bogeyman narrative.” But the toxic history of the phrase didn’t stop Adams from using it.

Did your article mention this professor, not affiliated with the college but as a protestor, was one of 100 arrested that day . Of the 100 arrested , 23 were students, 4 were employees and the rest including the professor were outside agitators. The person filming the event was his spouse , Sandra, who also was arrested. Those 23 students and 4 employees are now banned from the college. Sandra was filming her husband sticking the camera in to get good shots. Its unfortunate when the professor was confronted and attempts to take his camera away, the film portrayed the action of the professor to jerk away from the officers which appeared him to be resisting and he was gang tackled. Mind you the only version is from his wife filming and only showing one side . The one administrator in the kahki tan pants and blue shirt initially pointed out the professor which directed one officer to confront him.

In a new study, researchers have examined the long-term effects of government-led construction of manufacturing plants during World War II on the regions where they were built and on residents. The study found that wartime construction had large and persistent effects on local development, expanding relatively high-wage manufacturing employment throughout the postwar era, and that these long-term benefits were shared by prewar residents and their children.
Government-funded construction of manufacturing plants during World War II had large and persistent effects on the development of affected regions, the residents of those regions, and the lifetime earnings of children born in those regions before the war. Men born before WWII in counties where plants were built earned $1,200 (in 2020 dollars), or 2.5% more per year, in adulthood than men born in comparison regions.
"Our findings suggest that place-based economics policies that increase residents' access to local high-wage work opportunities can substantially expand opportunities for economic advancement for local residents," says Garin. "But the success of any proposed place-based intervention depends on the details."
In particular, the authors suggest, policymakers aiming to promote upward mobility should carefully consider whether an intervention will generate paths to higher-wage employment for the people already living in the target area. These goals may not always align with current priorities of the firms that policies aim to attract, and may be more difficult to sustain in the 21st century global economy than in the postwar era.
For these and other reasons, the authors suggest that it might be challenging for modern policy to replicate the impacts of plant construction on local upward mobility during World War II.

A majority of Democrats (54%) favor a single national government program to provide health insurance, including 57% of Democrats under 30 and even 43% of moderate to conservative Democrats. The only thing that makes it not “possible” is Congress, not the will of the people.
