So that would mean no more oil, no more LNG, no more refined goods, no more petrochemicals. And that would immediately lead to global economic catastrophe. Fixed income. Everyone is on a “fixed income” it isn’t like when month gets longer than finances we can go to boss and ask for more. Using the crutch of being on a fixed income is just another excuse for lack of planning. If you retired knowing full well what your SS was going to be locked in at for rest of your life with a small cost of living here and there and using the 4-5% withdrawal rule and don’t have enough you retired to damn early. Pissing and moaning that society owes you is childish. And also take into account Medicare is far from free. You can easily figure 3-4 hundred bucks a month for Medicare, your supplement and prescription plan.

When politicians say income is at an all-time high, I always wonder why they stop there.
Housing prices are near all-time highs.
Rent is near all-time highs.
Healthcare costs are near all-time highs.
Insurance costs are near all-time highs.
College costs are near all-time highs.
Childcare costs are near all-time highs.
The question is not whether income is higher than 40 years ago.
The question is whether the median worker can buy more with that income than the median worker could 40 years ago.
Looking only at wages while ignoring what those wages have to buy is like looking at only one side of an equation.
Workers don't live on income statistics.
They live on purchasing power.
If incomes double but the cost of living doubles too, people are not twice as well off.
What matters is not how many dollars are on a paycheck.
What matters is how much life those dollars can buy.

Everybody cheers when home values double. But nobody asks what happens to the renters, first-time buyers, young families, and people on fixed incomes.
A home is an asset to investors. It is shelter to everyone else.
When prices double, some people build wealth. Others watch the dream of ownership move twice as far away.

I find it interesting that whenever I talk about low wages, some people assume I'm talking about myself.
I'm retired. My situation is not the point.
The point is the millions of workers who are working every day and still having trouble paying for housing, food, healthcare, transportation, and other necessities.
When I argue for a living wage, I'm not speaking for myself. I'm speaking for the people still in the workforce who don't have the same security I do.
I don't advocate a living wage because I need one. I advocate it because I think people who work full-time should be able to live with dignity.
A person's value is not determined by their paycheck, and a society should not depend on jobs that do not provide a path to a decent life.

What bothers me about "get a better job" and "you should have planned better" is that these statements often show a lack of empathy for the reality many people face.
Some people did make bad decisions. Some people didn't.
Some got sick.
Some were injured.
Some were laid off.
Some are caring for children or elderly parents.
Some work full-time in jobs society depends on and still struggle to get ahead.
Before judging people, we should recognize that not everyone starts at the same place, faces the same obstacles, or receives the same opportunities.
Personal responsibility matters, but so do compassion, understanding, and basic human dignity.

"Get a better job" and "you should have planned better" are often presented as wisdom, but too often they are just ways to avoid empathy.
Not every hardship is caused by bad choices.
Not every success is caused solely by good choices.
Life is more complicated than that.
A little humanity goes a lot further than a quick judgment.

This is why "just get a better job" is not a solution to poverty at the societal level. It may work for some individuals, but it cannot work for everyone because there are not enough high-paying jobs available for everyone to move into one.
Every economy requires millions of workers in retail, food service, warehouses, transportation, caregiving, maintenance, customer service, and countless other occupations. Society depends on those jobs being done.
The question is not whether those jobs should exist. We already know they must exist.
The real question is whether a person working one of those necessary jobs full-time should be able to afford housing, food, utilities, transportation, and basic necessities.
If a job is necessary enough that society cannot function without it, then the worker performing that job should be guaranteed a living wage.
A society cannot tell millions of people, "Your job is essential, but your paycheck is optional."
wints

People often treat poverty as a personal problem when there is also a numbers problem.
There are millions more workers than there are highly paid management, professional, engineering, medical, executive, and skilled specialty positions.
Even if every worker were perfectly responsible, perfectly educated, and made all the right decisions, there would still be a bottom half of the wage distribution because that's how a distribution works.
Everyone cannot be above average at the same time.

I often hear "just get a better job" or "people should have planned better."
Let's think that through.
The median household net worth in the United States is about $216,000. Half of all households have less than that. Nearly 20% have less than about $13,000 in net worth.
If poor financial decisions were the only explanation, then we'd expect most people to be well above the median. They're not.
We also run into a simple math problem. Not everyone can have a top-paying job because there are not enough top-paying jobs available. By definition, if everyone got a "better job," those jobs would stop being the better jobs.
Every society needs truck drivers, retail workers, warehouse workers, teachers, CNAs, maintenance workers, delivery drivers, cashiers, food service workers, and countless other occupations. We cannot function without them.
Telling millions of people to "just get a better job" ignores the fact that someone still has to do the jobs they leave behind.
The average household net worth exceeds $1.2 million, while the median is about $216,000. That gap alone should tell us wealth is not distributed evenly across the population.
Individual choices matter. Education matters. Work ethic matters. But the numbers show that wealth outcomes are influenced by more than personal decisions alone. If almost half the country is below the median and millions of households have very little net worth, the explanation cannot simply be that tens of millions of people all made the exact same bad choices.
At some point, we have to acknowledge the difference between individual outcomes and system-wide outcomes. What works for one person cannot automatically work for 100 million people at the same time.

One thing people get wrong when talking about wealth is looking at the average and assuming that represents "most people."
It doesn't.
The average household net worth is over $1 million, but that's because very wealthy households pull the number upward. The median household net worth is only about $216,000, meaning half of households have less than that.
When you look deeper, nearly 20% of households have less than about $10,000 in net worth. That's the largest single wealth bracket in the country.
This is why averages can be misleading. A billionaire in a room with 999 broke people makes the average look great, but it doesn't mean the 999 people are doing well.
If you want to understand how most people are doing, look at the median and the wealth distribution, not just the average. The average tells you where the money is. The median tells you where the people are.
Too many discussions about wealth start and end with averages, and that leads people to believe the typical American household is sitting on over a million dollars. The numbers simply don't support that conclusion.

maybe this is why NY wants every gun shop to display graphic warning posters illustrating the dangers of keeping firearms in the home, modeled after cigarette packaging warning labels
NY lawmakers want gun shops to post ‘graphic’ visual warnings about risks of firearms
“If one person thinks twice and changes their mind at the counter because of seeing this picture, this law will be worth it,” Bottcher said at the state Capitol.
“It’s extremely dangerous to bring a gun into your home, especially when it’s not stored correctly,” he added.
A message on top of the photo in the mock-up sign tells gun buyers that access to firearms increases the risk of suicide, death during a domestic dispute or unintentional deaths to children, household members and others.
It also includes a number for the national suicide prevention lifeline.
“When the stakes are life and death, firearm warnings shouldn’t be easy to ignore,” Powers said in a statement.
“Graphic displays help make the risks of firearms unmistakable – and is a public health approach to solving scourge of gun violence.”

Consumers across party lines are fed up with high gas prices
A gallon of unleaded gas costs 40% more today than it did last year. A gallon of diesel is running nearly 75% higher.
As for Americans’ optimism about the economy 11 days before the midterm elections? That’s nearly running on empty.
High gas prices and years of persistently elevated inflation continue to drag down US consumer sentiment to historically low levels, new data showed Friday.
The University of Michigan’s October consumer sentiment index was the second lowest on records that go back to 1978. The record low of 44.8 was set in May, a month that saw the national average for a gallon of unleaded hit a four-year high of $4.56 because of oil supply shocks stemming from the war with Iran.
