"Trillions, Not Billions": Climate Activists Protest as COP29 Closes in on a "Bad Deal"

On the final official day of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, it is still unclear if this year's United Nations climate summit will lead to an agreement before the end of the official conference or if talks will extend into the weekend. The COP29 presidency has released a draft text that calls for a $1.3 trillion in annual climate financing by 2035, but it only obligates rich countries to provide $250 billion of that total. Climate justice activists and members of civil society who held a protest at COP29 on Friday say that amount falls far short of what's needed, demanding "trillions, not billions." Democracy Now! was there.

Talking Turkey About the Death Penalty
Biden and three governors should use their clemency powers before they leave office to save the lives of people facing the death penalty, our nation’s cruelest punishment.

Although he’s extended pardons and commutations during his term, President Joe Biden has yet to use his clemency powers for a person facing the federal death penalty, despite openly opposing capital punishment at one time. Biden can still heed increasing calls from advocates to improve his minimal clemency record and clear federal death row of all 40 current death sentences.

"Prior to the Civil War, moral reprehension, marriage norms, and chastity concerns established rape as a heinous offense. But then race entered the picture, and Southern lawmakers and state actors elevated rape to the gravest of all criminal offenses—a true fate worse than death for white women. This tethering of rape to Blackness and concurrent declaration of rape as worse than murder was no accident. Following a practice dating back thousands of years, where nations used the specter of their women’s defilement to rile up the public against enemies,132 Southern states used rape discourse, law, and policy to violently control newly enfranchised Black men.133 In 1895, legislators in South Carolina carefully crafted their disenfranchisement rules to cover “negro crimes” such as wife-beating and attempted rape.134 Notably absent were crimes then associated with whites, including fighting and murder. Invoking rape remained a winning strategy for maintaining white supremacy for decades (and remains one today).136 McGuire writes that, after World War II, Black soldiers returned with a sense of civic pride and political activism, which caused a white backlash in the form of rape accusations: “Black activists in the post-World War II period often joked that ‘the closer a black man got to a ballot box, the more he looked like a rapist.’” Any account of the historical structure and meaning of American sex-crime law must acknowledge the critical roles played by patriarchy and white supremacy in establishing the exceptional status of rape." Country Music’s Class-Struggle Roots

For decades, country music has been a bastion of conservative culture, a seemingly endless stream of songs about God, rednecks, tractors, and American nationalism. But the truth is that country music has a long history of giving voice to the class struggle, especially in the South.

Country originally emerged from an amalgamation of musical traditions from European and Mexican immigrants and African slaves. Work songs, chants, and spirituals expressing the struggle of poverty and oppression were set to the music of banjos and fiddles, leading to the first iterations of the genre.

As late as the 1950s, Tennessee Ernie Ford could sing of struggling miners: “You load 16 tons, what do you get? / Another day older and deeper in debt.”

Country’s rich class-struggle history was mostly forgotten after the genre was hijacked by conservative elements during the Vietnam War. Nashville record labels made big profits by marketing country as the loyal and patriotic alternative to the “protest music” emerging in other popular genres.

In 1965, Johnnie Wright had a hit with “Hello Vietnam,” a pro-war tune with lyrics like: “We must stop communism in that land / Or freedom will start slipping through our hands.”

But under the pressure of a dying capitalist system, some modern artists are bringing country music back to its class-struggle roots. In his 2020 song, “Long Violent History,” Tyler Childers expresses the horror of seeing Black Americans brutalized in the street by the police: “Could you imagine just constantly worryin’ / kickin’ and fightin’, beggin’ to breathe,” a reference to the 2014 police murder of Eric Garner.

Childers goes on to ponder what it will take for the working class to unite and fight back: “How many boys could they haul off this mountain / shoot full of holes … till we come into town in a stark ravin’ anger / Looking for answers and armed to the teeth.”

At its best, country concentrates the cries of wor

Disruptive Protest Isn’t Meant to Convince — It’s Meant to Break the Status Quo
We should prepare for the necessity of disruptive protests and have a shared understanding of their value.

While some will say protests like this only serve to polarize and alienate, strategic disruption serves a purpose that goes beyond persuasion. After all, the Stop Cop City activists’ argument was, in part, that the democratic process itself had been blocked from going forward. Their problem was not that people disagree with them; their problem was that people in power refused to listen.

This raises a larger point that is often missed in discussions of public protest actions — a point that will be important as we prepare to escalate our struggles in a heated and ever-hotter political environment. Disruptive protest — encompassing both civil disobedience and extralegal direct action — does not primarily aim to persuade or to make a message morally appealing to a broad audience. Rather, the intent of disruption is to advance political goals by interrupting, disturbing and creating tension within the status quo. Disruptive protest works not because it convinces a new audience of its messages, but because it produces discomfort, cognitive dissonance or material consequences for those who uphold dominant systems. It can also demonstrate power, showing that protesters have the ability to stop the gears of oppression.

These protests are not meant to convince — so critiques of their unconvincingness are moot. Rather, these protests are meant to afflict powerful people and systems with chaos, embarrassment and inconvenience. When this sort of disruptiveness is strategic, and even sometimes when it is not, the disruption has political impacts that cannot be replaced by permitted protests or political pleas.

The Biden administration is quietly rushing to implement new policies that will loosen restrictions on migrants who entered the US illegally — a parting attempt to thwart President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration crackdowns and mass deportations, sources tell The Post.

And the Big Apple will be ground zero for these changes.

The outgoing administration intends to launch an ICE Portal app starting in early December in New York City that will allow migrants to bypass in-person check-ins to their local ICE office. Homeland Security sources tell The Post the app will make it easier for migrants to flee authorities in part because the software has proven to be glitchy and unreliable.

Even when it’s working correctly, the new app doesn’t check for past arrests or outstanding warrants — something the current system tied to in-person appointments does, sources said.

Up to 100,000 migrants will be enrolled in the first wave of the program, sources said.

That’s just one of a handful of initiatives being pushed through before inauguration day — including allowing migrants to contest government orders to undergo electronic tracking while they await their immigration appointments.

And experts said rolling back the policies might not be as simple as Trump waving his pen, because changes could be subject to both procedural hurdles and legal challenges.

ICC Issues Arrest Warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant for Crimes Against Humanity

The court said there is “reasonable ground” to believe the Israeli leaders committed crimes against humanity in Gaza.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued long-awaited arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

The ICC said in a statement that there are “reasonable grounds to believe” that Netanyahu and Gallant have violated international law in using starvation as a method of warfare and committed crimes against humanity of “murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts.” The court also accused the two officials of the war crime of intentionally attacking a civilian population.

The issuing of the warrants means that the Israeli officials could be arrested if they stepped foot in countries that are party to the ICC statute and that would comply with the warrant. Practically, this means that Netanyahu and Gallant will avoid certain countries when traveling abroad, which Netanyahu has already been doing in anticipation of the arrest warrant issuance.

The court said it decided to release normally secret information on the warrants because the alleged war crimes are still ongoing. Thus far, Israeli forces have killed at least 44,000 Palestinians in Gaza, though expert analyses have found that the true death toll is likely much higher.

Overnight on Thursday, Israel carried out a series of bombings of Gaza that killed at least 88 Palestinians, “including many children in their sleep,” as Al Jazeera reported. One attack alone in the north Gaza city of Beit Lahia killed 66 people.

Next Steps for Our Movements

We need to build protests at Trump’s inauguration, demanding an end to the genocide. Had Harris won, we should have done the same, as I said before the election results came out.

Trump has said he would end the wars — we know he is not antiwar anymore than the Democrats are, and it will be up to mass movements to force an end to all military aid for the massacre in Gaza and the bloodbath in Ukraine.

We cannot follow Bernie Sanders, AOC, or any other self-proclaimed leaders of the “Resistance™” who will try to lead us back into the Democratic Party. We should be prepared that they may hold mass events. We need to be there to explain why working people must reject their bankrupt leadership and fight for an independent path forward.

We desperately need a new antiwar party for working people, but there is currently no force with the resources or authority to launch it in the coming months. We can, however, take steps in that direction by severing our ties with the Democratic Party, and laying down the framework for a working-class party.

The Democrats won’t protect working people or oppressed groups anymore than they did the last time Trump was elected. They will again prioritize the stability of their capitalist system. Their challenge to Trump during his first term was exclusively through the courts. Why? Because they are more afraid of working-class movements, more afraid of working people as a whole, than they are of Trump.

Building unity around a fighting strategy against the wars and for offensive gains for working people’s collective interests is what is needed. And the basis of our unity cannot be around how someone voted, for Trump or Harris or a third party, but rather if they are prepared to fight with us against the warmongering billionaire agenda of both parties. We cannot succumb to the idea of blaming working people for how they voted. We need to lead the fight forward.

As I said in Seattle at our rally two weeks ago — we will be the ones fighting Trump. Just like we did last time.

We Will Be The Ones Fighting Trump

We, socialists, were the ones who, under the threat of Trump’s Muslim ban, shut down an international airport, SeaTac Airport, with mass civil disobedience. This was the only US airport fully shut down. Also at SeaTac, the Democrats played no role, other than Democrats like Pramila Jayapal doing a photo op there and leaving. In fact, the Democrats were so unhappy about our movement’s civil disobedience on that night, that they told me so in repeated phone calls as we were protesting at the airport.

When the Supreme Court was preparing to overturn Roe v. Wade and the Democrats had rolled over once again, we, socialists and working people and union members, built protests, and our movement won the first abortion rights sanctuary in the country, in Seattle. This made it illegal for Seattle police to arrest anyone who came to Seattle accused of violating an abortion law in another state. Later that year we also won full funding for all abortion needs for anyone inside the city of Seattle, whether a resident or traveling for that purpose.

What was always incorrect with the “Resistance™“ was seeing the Democratic Party as the vehicle to fight Trump and the right wing. This is an utterly failed and dead-end strategy. During Trump’s first administration, the Democratic Party channeled much of the anger at him back towards passive electoral support for themselves. They discouraged mass movements. Instead, they created a series of nonprofits to suck up the energy and ultimately let off steam without accomplishing anything.

This is the reason why Marx and Engels emphasized in 1850 that the working class must have its own parties and candidates:

Even where there is no prospect of achieving their election the workers must put up their own candidates to preserve their independence, to gauge their own strength and to bring their revolutionary position and party standpoint to public attention. They must not be led astray by the empty phrases of the democrats, who will maintain that the workers’ candidates will split the democratic party and offer the forces of reaction the chance of victory. All such talk means, in the final analysis, that the proletariat is to be swindled. The progress which the proletarian party will make by operating independently in this way is infinitely more important than the disadvantages resulting from the presence of a few reactionaries in the representative body.

It was a positive thing that a number of labor unions passed ceasefire resolutions since the onslaught against Gaza began. But then the leaders of these same unions, including Shawn Fain, endorsed Biden and then Harris. History will judge the leaders who looked the other way and gave their support to candidates arming and funding a genocide.

We will be discussing the concrete steps forward at our upcoming mass organizing conference on February 22nd next year in Seattle. The following day we will hold Workers Strike Back’s first national convention, where we will be discussing and laying out our movement’s plans, as well as democratically electing a new steering committee.

What Kind of Party Is Needed

Any candidates we run need to be independent of the two parties of the billionaires. They must run on a clear working-class platform like ending all military support for Israel and demanding a $25 minimum wage. They must use their campaigns to build mass movements for those demands. They should pledge to only accept the average worker’s wage.

They need to use their campaigns, and elected offices if they win, to expose the establishment and disrupt business as usual — you will know they have done so if they are attacked by representatives of the two parties, not embraced or ignored by them.

But we should not look to run dozens or hundreds of candidates — it would be far better if a few ran on a clear working-class basis, rather than many candidates running without accountability to our movements and then selling us out.

Most of all, we need to build a stronger antiwar movement, and a stronger workers’ movement with militant rank-and-file organizing.

The labor movement will have a key role to play in a new party, but first we need a section of progressive unions to break with the Democrats.

Intro to Fat Studies: Fatness, Blackness and Their Intersections

Examines fatness as an area of human difference subject to privilege and discrimination that intersects with other systems of oppression based on gender, race, class, sexual orientation, and ability. Though we will look at fatness as intersectional, this course will particularly highlight the relationship between fatness and Blackness. We approach this area of study through an interdisciplinary humanities and social-science lens which emphasizes fatness as a social justice issue. The course closes with an examination of fat liberation as liberation for all bodies with a particular emphasis on performing arts and activism as a vehicle for liberation and challenging fatmisia.

UC Berkeley to offer new course that describes Hamas as a 'revolutionary resistance force fighting settler colonialism'

The University of California, Berkeley, will offer a course in spring 2025 that describes Hamas as a “revolutionary resistance force fighting settler colonialism."

According to a screenshot posted by Eyal Yakoby, the course, titled “English Composition in Connection with the Reading of World Literature, Leninism and Anarchism: A Theoretical Approach to Literature and Film,” is set to be offered in spring 2025.

In addition to describing Hamas as a “revolutionary resistance force,” the course description also accuses America of funding “genocide.”

”With the US-backed and -funded genocide being carried out against Indigenous Palestinians by the Israeli Occupying Force, many have found it difficult to envision a reality beyond the one we are living in today. At the same time, we have also seen a rise in global socialist (and in particular Leninist) movements that are actively combating this destructive imperial agenda. From the Hamas revolutionary resistance forces combating settler-colonialism to a continuous anti-imperialist politic by Cuba, Vietnam, Venezuela, China, DPRK, and various Indigenous and First-Nation peoples across the Americas, there continues to be a commitment to anti-imperialism and anti-capitalism... ,” states the course description.

Both instructors set to teach the course, Christián Gonzalez Reyes and Harry Mizumoto, signed a letter following spring 2024 protests at UCLA that blames Israel for “all violent struggle that is currently taking place on Palestinian lands.”

”To blame anyone other than the Zionist Israeli government and its settlers mischaracterizes this struggle and fuels the ongoing violence. Although international law states that Palestians’ have the right to defend themselves in their ancestral homelands, it is evident these rights only apply to some,” the letter states.

New Fastest Supercomputer Will Simulate Nuke Testing El Capitan debuted on the Top500 supercomputing list at #1

In 1965, the United States and other nuclear powers committed to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, which prohibited nuclear tests. The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a successor to the Manhattan Project, now tests nukes only in simulation. To that end, the NNSA yesterday unveiled the world’s fastest supercomputer to air in its mission to maintain a safe, secure, and reliable nuclear stockpile.

El Capitan was announced yesterday at the SC Conference for supercomputing in Atlanta, Georgia, and it debuted at #1 in the newest Top500 list, a twice-yearly ranking of the world’s highest performing supercomputers. El Capitan, housed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., can perform over 2700 quadrillion operations per second at its peak. The previous record holder, Frontier, could do just over 2000 quadrillion peak operations per second.

Trump Scapegoats Migrants While Backing Policies That Displace Them

Ben Becker, the Editor-in-Chief of BreakThrough News discusses how Trump and Harris fueled the anti-immigrant, anti-worker hysteria that propelled the politics of the US-Mexico into front and center of the 2024 election. Becker demystifies Trump’s many false, ahistorical claims about immigration policy, particularly how US regime change, sanctions, and interventions have fueled migration surges. Becker explains, “The biggest migratory surges of the last 10 years– whether it be from Syria, Afghanistan, Venezuela or Cuba” bear the “direct imprint of US foreign policy, intervention, sanctions, & blockades making lives miserable for people.”

Schenwar: One of the most challenging experiences I’ve had in organizing over the past few years was when one of the children at my kid’s elementary school last year was tragically killed in a domestic violence incident. In response, a number of parents wanted to pursue a law that they thought would prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future. But a law could mean more criminalization.

A few of us in the parent community who are part of abolitionist organizing got together and started reaching out to folks who are doing anti-violence work around the city, getting their thoughts on how to redirect this energy. One of the main things these anti-violence organizers emphasized to us was, tragically, this child is already gone. No amount of intense supervision or incarceration is going to bring them back. So how do we look at the conditions that made this extreme act of violence possible? What happened and how can we change those conditions?

They brought these questions to the parent community, which included people who are not abolitionists, but when it was put in the context of this particular situation, they got it. We started brainstorming together, and one of the things that came up was the lack of education around gender-based violence and the dynamics of patriarchy in schools. So some of the parents talked to Healing to Action, which is an amazing organization that mobilizes survivors of gender-based violence to become organizing leaders, and they shared about their efforts to push for a comprehensive sex-ed curriculum in Chicago public schools that includes education around gender-based violence. Now more parents had the opportunity to support those efforts. I thought that was beautiful.

Bill Ayers: That’s a great example of elevating the conversation about what really creates safety. Parents are often the primary audience for police propaganda because we’re so afraid for our children, but conversations like that show how we can move toward community action.

Raising Abolitionists
A new anthology invites parents into the work of building a world without prisons.

In their new anthology We Grow the World Together: Parenting Toward Abolition, Maya Schenwar and Kim Wilson assemble a group of contributors who engage with hard questions about how the work of raising children intersects with the world-building work of imagining a world without police and prisons. As they note in the following interview, parents are often the most receptive audience for police messaging. How then, they ask, can parents reject fear and instead raise children in a way that centers the desire for a world in which everyone is free?

We appeal to all students in Canada – this struggle is your struggle! The same people aiding and abetting genocide are the same people destroying our education system. They are the same people who chain us in debt as tuition continues to go through the roof. They have billions for war, crumbs for housing.

The best service we can render to the oppressed peoples of the Middle East and elsewhere is to overthrow our own ruling class.

The genocide in Palestine and the war spreading across the Middle East—all with the active support of Western imperialists—offers a concentrate of the worst that capitalism has to offer. To end its suffering once and for all, the capitalist system must go.

At least 26 student associations representing 50,000 students will be on strike for Palestine on Nov. 21-22!

This number could rise to 84,000 as at least 34,000 students from a dozen student associations will also be holding strike votes this week.

This is a massive step in the right direction for the Palestine movement in Quebec and Canada. After more than a year of genocide, the student movement is finally getting moving!

In August the Revolutionary Communist Party launched an open appeal to all student unions and pro-Palestine groups to unite and fight for a student strike for Palestine. We launched the Student Strike for Palestine campaign which brought this initiative to 45 campuses across the country. We worked tirelessly, arguing that consumer boycotts and demands on capitalist institutions like the government, the United Nations or university administrations were not working and that we needed revolutionary class struggle methods to defeat imperialism and liberate Palestine. This wave of student strikes is the fruit of that work.

This strike is very significant. Nov. 21 will be the biggest student strike since the strike in the spring of 2015 against austerity in Quebec.

This movement is all the more significant for having overcome the language divide. All of Montreal’s main English and French-speaking campuses are involved!

We say: this is only the beginning! Now that the ice is broken, student associations and pro-Palestinian groups must continue promoting the idea of a strike across the country and work towards an all out strike to shut down the universities.

The Captive Maternal and Family Abolition: Envisioning Revolutionary Care

Join Joy James and M. E. O’Brien in dialogue, moderated with Lara Sheehi, in exploring care, abolition and revolutionary struggle.

In their respective research, all three have grappled with the place of maternal love, caretaking, and interdependent nurturing possible through collective insurrection against white supremacy and capitalism.

Joy James explores this through the Captive Maternal in Black rebellion, maroon sites of revolutionary love. M. E. O’Brien grapples with family abolition through what she calls “insurgent social reproduction,” the revolutionary horizons of abundant care that emerge in collective mass rebellion. Lara Sheehi draws on the decolonial potential of psychoanalysis, in Palestine and around the world. They will explore the intersections and tensions of their work, seeking to illuminate the love made possible only through abolitionist revolution.

“Let’s unite!”: Poisoned residents of America’s sacrifice zones are banding together

Sacrifice zones are areas where people have been left to live in conditions that threaten life itself, from toxic industrial pollution to the deadly, intensifying effects of man-made climate change. In a more just and less cruel society, the very concept of a “sacrifice zone” wouldn’t exist. And yet, in America, after decades of deregulation and public disinvestment, more working-class communities are becoming sacrifice zones, and more of us are being set up for sacrifice at the altars of corporate greed and government abandonment.

America’s sacrifice zones are no longer extreme outliers; they are, in fact, a harrowing model of the future that lies in store for most of us if the corporate monsters, corporate politicians, and Wall Street vampires destroying our communities aren’t stopped. And residents of different sacrifice zones across the country, fellow workers on the frontlines of all this reckless and preventable destruction, are connecting with each other, learning from one another, and working together to fight back. In this Working People liveshow, recorded on Oct. 19 at Red Emma’s worker cooperative bookstore, cafe, and community events space in Baltimore, we speak with a special panel of residents from four different sacrifice zones in the US about how the situations they’re facing in their own communities and their struggles for justice and accountability are connected.

Panelists include: Hilary Flint, communications director of Beaver County Marcellus Awareness Community and a former resident of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, a few miles from the site of the Feb 2023 Norfolk Southern train derailment and chemical disaster in East Palestine, Ohio; Melanie Meade, a community organizer, educator, and life-long resident of Clairton, Pennsylvania, the site of US Steel's Clairton Coke Works, which was named the most toxic air polluter in Allegheny County in a 2021 report by PennEnvironment; Elis

“It’s time to clean up shop”: Justice Democrats vow primary challenges against establishment Dems
The group that backed AOC's insurgent primary win puts Democrats on notice over embrace of billionaires

The Justice Democrats, the group behind many of the insurgent progressive Democratic challengers who pulled off shocking upsets in recent years, are putting the party’s establishment on notice, telling Salon that they intend to back primary challengers in the 2026 midterms.

In the wake of the Democrats' total collapse in the 2024 election, losing the House, the Senate and the presidency, the party has erupted into infighting between its establishment and and more populist wings.

Usamah Andrabi, a spokesman for the group, told Salon that “it’s time to clean up shop in the Democratic Party frankly” and that “progressives and the left warned” about the looming failure for Democrats “for months and years prior.”

While the group has backed off of aggressive primary challenges to incumbent Democrats in recent years, Andrabi said that the Democrats’ failure to deliver any major victories in 2024 showed that the preferred electoral strategy of the party’s establishment is ineffective.

“For so long the Democratic Party has tried to be a big tent that somehow includes the working class and the billionaire class and that says it fights for the interests of the working class,” Andrabi said. “We continue to allow our party to align ourselves with the wealthiest few and everyday people are beginning to take notice.”

Moving abroad? Here’s how much it’ll cost
Spoiler alert: It isn't always cheap to leave the U.S., and it may not be that easy

Canada
For most, the way into Canada is through the Express Entry program. Applicants need to have a certain amount of cash savings — or what Canada calls “settlement funds” — to apply for Express Entry. A single person needs to demonstrate they have at least $14,690 CAD, or $10,548.08 in U.S. dollars, while a couple would need $13,131.61 USD. A family of four would need at least $19,600.47 USD to be considered.

For those with enough cash, the first step is filling out the Express Entry application. Each applicant is assigned a point-based score, known as a Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS), based on factors including their age, work experience, education, proficiency in English or French, and how much money they have on hand. Most Express Entry applications are usually processed within six months. From there, the Canadian government ranks applicants and invites the highest-ranking ones to apply to immigrate.

Applying for Express Entry costs $1,088.06 USD, but individuals can expect to spend around $1,600, according to Canadim, a Quebec-based immigration law firm. Those other costs include an educational credential assessment (around $142), a language test ($214), biometrics ($60), a medical exam fee ($320) and a police clearance certificate, which costs around $70.

More than just visa costs
Obtaining the appropriate visa is just a fraction of the cost of an international move. If you’ll be holding onto most of your belongings and furnishings, you’ll need to ship those abroad, too. Depending on how much you have to move, as well as whether you ship via air or on an ocean freight, shipping goods overseas can range from $1,000 to upwards of $10,000 (the latter cost represents moving a larger home’s furnishings).

There’s also the cost of the flight; on average, a one-way international plane ticket costs around $1,400, according to Angie’s List. If y

Why California Voters Rejected Criminal Justice Reform This Election
Criminal justice policy advocates caution against viewing the election results as a referendum against reform.

“We need to be careful not to overgeneralize and not to presume that this is somehow a death sentence vis a vis criminal justice reform,” Miriam Krinsky, a former federal prosecutor and the founder of advocacy group Fair and Just Prosecution, said in an interview.

“These issues are cyclical and often progress is made in spurts with two steps forward, one step back. … We find ourselves at a moment in time where there’s a lot of anger and discontent with the status quo, and where a fear narrative was used to propel that anger.”
“The other side co-opted reform messaging,” said Anne Irwin, the director of Smart Justice California, a progressive criminal justice reform group. “In Proposition 36, they started off their campaign using really traditional tough-on-crime rhetoric, and several months in, they took a big shift and began using a treatment framing, referring to this as a mass treatment initiative, not a mass incarceration initiative. They did that because their polling was showing that as much as voters in California want something to be done about what they’re seeing and feeling, they do not want that thing to be mass incarceration.”

Prop 36 leaned heavily on the public’s perception that crime was out of control, a notion not backed by crime data but reinforced by breathless media coverage of viral videos of organized theft rings.

“Those are an anomaly, they happen, they are part of the public consciousness, but going forward those aren’t necessarily the people who are going to be impacted by the changes in the law,” said Cyn Yamashiro, a former Los Angeles County public defender who now works at the Wren Collective, a criminal justice research and policy group.

Reform Works

The reason that deep pockets cannot defeat criminal justice reform is simple: The alternative just doesn’t work. People are beginning to realize we can’t incarcerate our way to safety.

Treating prison as the only solution to crime has given us the highest incarceration rate of any democracy on earth and a system in which three out of four prisoners are rearrested within five years of release.

Left-wing groups are pressuring President Joe Biden to commute sentences for all federal death row inmates before he leaves office, which includes infamous murderers like the Boston Marathon bomber and Charleston church shooter.

Hundreds of Democrat-aligned organizations have signed onto a petition urging Biden to uphold his campaign promise to abolish the death penalty by commuting the sentence of every inmate, writing it is “not too late to act decisively.”

“As you are aware, this abhorrent and outdated punishment raises profound concerns, including the arbitrariness of its application, its inherent racial bias, and the alarming rate of innocence among those sentenced to death,” the petition states.

Manhattan Institute fellow Charles Fain Lehman told the Daily Caller News Foundation commuting all death sentences would be a “repudiation of the mandate the American people just gave” by electing President Donald Trump.

“Joe Biden had four years to enact a mass executive clemency,” Lehman said. “He did not do it. To do it on his way out would be preposterous. It would be particularly preposterous because it would mean giving executive clemency to people that every right thinking American agrees deserves to be put to death.”

Trump has said he wants to expand the use of the death penalty in certain cases, such as for child rapists, drug dealers and illegal migrants who kill U.S. citizens.

There's not really a call for lesbianism in this pseudo-lesbian separatism. The result is a rather whorephobic flavor. I think there is an evident moral denigration in this framework, given the lack of accounting for groups like sex workers—the women who continue to, you know, sleep with the enemy.

@52014

So, there's this core difference: heteropessimism or heterofatalism is not really trying to do anything about these discontents, right? But 4B is ostensibly a movement invested in change. I was really interested to hear that you see it as its own kind of fatalism, right?

I do. I think this is a discursive separatism, which doesn't even have the vestiges of an anti-capitalist analysis that lesbian separatisms of the women's liberation movement in the Sixties and Seventies were working with. And I’m critical of those as well, because I think there was a counter-revolution within women's liberation in the second wave of feminism, which resulted in a female cultural nationalism taking over the more utopian, trans-inclusive, liberatory projects that wanted to liberate all people, communize care, and abolish the family.

This meme in the South Korean context is explicitly girl-boss-ish in flavor, and very anti-socialist. It's about wealth and achievement and individually breaking the glass ceiling. There's not even a relationship with a movement of revolutionary ambition. It's also very concerning to me that the romanticized version of 4B that many Western feminists seem to have in mind is not paying attention to the ample evidence of queerphobic, transphobic, and homophobic flavors in the various message boards that represent 4B in South Korea.

Also, there is a notion that men are essentially a different, unredeemable kind of species here, right? There isn't a sense that the strikes in question—the four “no's” against marriage, sex, dating, and birth—are contingent on a particular set of political demands being met. It seems rather indefinite and open-ended. Is it really the case that men are unredeemable? That they can never be incorporated into a comradely coexistence with us? I find that a terribly nihilistic worldview.

It concerns me greatly that the definition of sex that seems to be operative here is about a resource that women dole out to men and never have appetites themselves. T

A feminist utopianism
Sophie Lewis argues against the 'fatalism' of both 4B and heteropessimism, and calls for a collective movement built on solidarity.

You draw an interesting connection between the 4B movement and heteropessimism, but let’s start with their differences. Can you give us a brief primer?

Heteropessimism was coined by Asa Seresin in 2019. He is describing a prevalent mood of somewhere between tragedy and boredom—and resentment—amongst self-described straight women about their sexuality, which they view almost like a cage. Seresin says that we, as human beings, remain secretly attached to the continuity of the very things that we sincerely decry as toxic, broken.

It describes a resigned—and, I would add, anti-utopian—kind of misandry among straight women, who basically are saying that they have no intention of quitting heterosexuality. But, also, they have no intention of seeking to collectively transform it. Heteropessimists wish they were not attracted to men, but they're unwilling to strategize a politics that might change the situation responsible for these feelings.

4B is an interesting one, because the way it has been covered in the West is not really consonant with the way that South Korean feminist commentators have tended to describe its existence. There was a real mobilization, a real movement of MeToo in South Korea, but this term 4B has largely been an online chat room phenomenon. There's much evidence that the declining birth rate in South Korea cannot be attributed to this online lifestyle trend.

Even though I have massive critiques of 4B and think that it's a pessimism of its own, I want to insist that it's a different pessimism, because heteropessimism was talking about a perverse commitment to continuing—to date and and make babies with and marry men, while insisting on the right to hate it. 4B is saying, “We quit.”
